The Flash” Sets the Pace at the Box Office with $9.7 Million in Previews
After a tumultuous journey to the big screen, “The Flash,” the highly anticipated Warner Bros. film directed by Andy Muschietti and starring Ezra Miller as the iconic DC Comics speedster, is off to a lightning-fast start. The movie raked in an impressive $9.7 million during its preview showings.
Despite the challenges it faced along the way, “The Flash” is finally making its debut this weekend, and industry projections suggest a promising opening weekend box office performance. Estimates place the film’s earnings around $70 million, with some predictions reaching as high as $85 million, while others forecast a more conservative $68 million.
These figures align with the previous releases from DC Studios, such as last year’s “Black Adam” and 2018’s “Aquaman,” both of which debuted to $67 million. Warner Bros. undoubtedly hopes that “The Flash” will follow in the footsteps of its “Justice League” counterpart rather than Dwayne Johnson’s antihero. “Black Adam” fell short with $168 million domestically and less than $400 million globally, while Jason Momoa’s “Aquaman” surged to $335 million in North America and an impressive $1.14 billion worldwide. It goes without saying that “The Flash” is poised to outperform March’s “Shazam: Fury of the Gods,” which commenced with $30 million and concluded its domestic run with a mere $57 million. In terms of Thursday previews, “Black Adam” amassed $7.6 million, “Aquaman” secured $9 million, and “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” garnered $3.4 million.
Alongside Ezra Miller’s Scarlet Speedster, “The Flash” also reunites Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton in their respective portrayals of Batman. As Barry Allen, also known as the Flash, traverses dimensions to prevent his mother’s death, he must join forces with Keaton’s Batman and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl to defeat General Zod, played by Michael Shannon, and save the multiverse.
In addition to “The Flash,” this weekend’s releases include Pixar’s “Elemental,” a heartwarming tale of two water and fire beings who develop a connection. Projections indicate a $35 million opening for the film, potentially marking one of Pixar’s more modest debuts, following in the footsteps of 2015’s “The Good Dinosaur” and 2020’s “Onward,” which both opened with $39 million. “Elemental” generated $2.4 million in previews. Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s black horror satire, “The Blackening,” is expected to open with $7.5 million, having accumulated $900,000 during previews.
